Strength Training and Conditioning

Whether recovering from injury or wanting to enhance your fitness lifestyle, strength training and conditioning can provide significant health benefits such as, stamina, endurance and overall muscular tone.

Strength Training progressively increases the output force of the muscle through weight incrementally along with exercises that target specific muscular groups. And it uses resistance to induce muscular contraction.

Conditioning is a consistent regimen of exercise, diet, and rest. A proper conditioning program has multiple components, including strength, speed, balance, agility, coordination, power and endurance.

When done correctly, both Strength Training combined with Conditioning you will notice:

• Improved joint functions
• Reduction of potential injuries in muscle, tendons and ligaments.
• Increased bone density
• Increased metabolism
• Improved cardiac functions
• Improved lipid profiles

Keep Cool with your Summer Exercise! – TheraSport Physical Therapy

Summer exercise is great, but some days the conditions may not be ideal. The sweltering sun, high humidity, and blazing hot temperatures are all factors you must consider with your summer exercise routine. You can learn tips to enhance your exercise routine this summer, without compromising your health.

• Time your exercises around the hottest points of the day. Beat the heat.

• Take breaks and rest in shaded areas. If you are doing cardio, remember to take in account the levels of heat and stress on your body.

• Protect your skin from over exposure of UV rays. Use a sunblock when exercising outside. Make sure you reapply when necessary.

• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and after your exercise routine.

• Make sure you eat well. You need to have a well rounded diet to perform your best, especially in harsh weather conditions.

• Be mindful of how long you are exposed to the heat. It takes very little time in the sun for our bodies to get overheated. So manage your exercise time properly.

• During the hottest exercise days, consider wearing loose,  and UV protective clothing. You want your clothes to breathe to ensure you won’t overheat.

2014 Back-To-School Tips from TheraSport Physical Therapy!

Image

Do you know how much your child’s backpack weighs? According to the APTA if it’s more than 15 percent of his or her body weight, then it could hurt your child’s back. Millions of students in the United States carry backpacks to and from school, often overloaded with books, supplies and equipment.  Weight of the backpack and improper use can result in injury to the skeletally immature child.

During adolescence kids are going through growth spurts and so their bones and posture are vulnerable to injury.  Injury can result when a child carrying a heavy backpack uses bad posture or shifts there weight abnormally to adapt a heavy load.  These adaptations can cause pain from disk injury, improper spinal alignment and deformity.  In addition, the muscles of neck, shoulder region and lower back can be strained leading to injury.  In more advanced cases, a child may even experience nerve compression and damage.

Some of the warning signs that a problem may be arising include back pain, fatigue, red marks on the shoulders, tingling or numbness in the arms and a shift or leaning in one direction.

The American Physical Therapy Association has set forth guidelines that should be used with backpacks to reduce the risks associated with them.  These recommendations include:

–       Backpacks should be worn on both shoulders for equal weight distribution, and the height  should fall two inches below the shoulder blades and sit at waist level.

–       It should have padded shoulder straps, which distribute the weight in the bag evenly over his/her shoulders.

–       Shoulder straps should fit comfortably on the shoulder and under the arms, so the arms can move freely.

–       The bottom of the pack should rest in the contour of the lower back.

–       Keep the load 10-15% or less of the child’s body-weight.

–       Organize the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest items closest to the back

–       Carry only those items that are required for the day

TheraSport Physical Therapy can help you and your child choose a proper backpack that fits your child properly.  Additionally, our physical therapists can help your child improve their posture, correct muscle imbalances and manage the pain from improper backpack use.  TheraSport has two board-certified McKenzie credentialed practitioners to help with all spinal related problems.

Put a little Spring in your step at TheraSport Physical Therapy!

Image

Spring is right around the corner, which means it’s time to tend to that garden! However, getting down on your hands and knees to plant can be difficult and hard on your back.

If you experience this kind of trouble, try warming up before you start gardening by walking or stretching. Don’t do the same task in the same position for too long as that can lead to muscle and joint pain or repetitive-motion injuries.

At TheraSport Physical Therapy, we can show you stretching techniques that address stiffness. We also teach core-strengthening exercises that can help reduce low back pain, common in prolonged kneeling and bent over positions.

TheraSport Physical Therapy – Maximizing Performance & Rehabilitation

Certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy

TheraSport Physical Therapy is a privately owned physical therapy practice with two clinic locations—one in Merchantville, NJ and one in Sewell, NJ.  We pride ourselves on the clinical expertise of our therapy staff.  All of our therapists have 12 or more years of experience treating patients.  We have worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings so we are familiar with the many complications which may arise post-operatively with orthopedic patients who are now seen very acutely in outpatient clinics.  With the aging population, many medical factors influence our clinical decision making and must be taken into account when providing therapy services.  With our extensive experience with both cardiopulmonary and neurological populations in the inpatient setting, we feel that our clinical expertise is far beyond most other outpatient therapy clinics.

We offer four unique subspecialties within the field of physical therapy at our practice.  We have a Sports Certified Specialist who is credentialed by the APTA for detailed diagnosis and treatment of the injured athlete.  There is an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist also credentialed by the APTA in the evaluation and management of orthopedic and post-operative patients.  These two certifications require at least two years of experience treating those specific populations and passing rigorous written examination.  We also have two clinicians Certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) by the McKenzie Institute USA.  This certification requires over 100 hours of continuing education in the mechanical evaluation and diagnosis of the cervical spine, lumbar spine and the extremities.  We offer a final subspecialty certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation through the Susan Herdman program based out of Emory University.  This is one of the most intensive, nationally recognized training programs currently offered in the field of vestibular therapy.  Both the MDT and Vestibular certifications require passing written and practical examination.

TheraSport Physical Therapy prides itself on faster, more effective long-term patient outcomes.  We are highly trained diagnosticians who perform detailed physical examination and establish individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings.  We encourage extensive continuing education and pride ourselves on the superior clinical skills of our staff.  We consistently deliver the highest quality care to our patients and tailor each and every therapy program to the specific needs of the individual.  We thank you for allowing us to participate in your care.
