Helpful Back-To-School Tips from TheraSport Physical Therapy!

Do you know how much your child’s backpack weighs? According to the APTA if it’s more than 15 percent of his or her body weight, then it could hurt your child’s back. Millions of students in the United States carry backpacks to and from school, often overloaded with books, supplies and equipment.  Weight of the backpack and improper use can result in injury to the skeletally immature child.

During adolescence kids are going through growth spurts and so their bones and posture are vulnerable to injury.  Injury can result when a child carrying a heavy backpack uses bad posture or shifts there weight abnormally to adapt a heavy load.  These adaptations can cause pain from disk injury, improper spinal alignment and deformity.  In addition, the muscles of neck, shoulder region and lower back can be strained leading to injury.  In more advanced cases, a child may even experience nerve compression and damage.

Some of the warning signs that a problem may be arising include back pain, fatigue, red marks on the shoulders, tingling or numbness in the arms and a shift or leaning in one direction.

The American Physical Therapy Association has set forth guidelines that should be used with backpacks to reduce the risks associated with them.  These recommendations include:

–       Backpacks should be worn on both shoulders for equal weight distribution, and the height  should fall two inches below the shoulder blades and sit at waist level.

–       It should have padded shoulder straps, which distribute the weight in the bag evenly over his/her shoulders.

–       Shoulder straps should fit comfortably on the shoulder and under the arms, so the arms can move freely.

–       The bottom of the pack should rest in the contour of the lower back.

–       Keep the load 10-15% or less of the child’s body-weight.

–       Organize the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest items closest to the back

–       Carry only those items that are required for the day

TheraSport Physical Therapy can help you and your child choose a proper backpack that fits your child properly.  Additionally, our physical therapists can help your child improve their posture, correct muscle imbalances and manage the pain from improper backpack use.  TheraSport has two board-certified McKenzie credentialed practitioners to help with all spinal related problems.

ImPACT Testing Now at TheraSport Physical Therapy

Image

ImPACT is the abbreviation for Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing.  It is a computerized test which takes approximately 20 minutes to administer.  The ImPACT test measures verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time.  Testing can be administered online for individuals or groups and a proctor should be present throughout all group testing.

Baseline testing is the administration of the ImPACT to the athlete who has not suffered a concussion.  Baseline testing should be repeated every 2 years in the growing child due to brain maturation.  It is most important for contact/collision athletes and athletes with high risk for falls.  These sports include, but are not limited to, football, hockey, gymnastics, cheerleading, soccer, basketball and lacrosse.  Concussions can happen anywhere, anytime–gym class, school playgrounds or even your own backyard. Although normative data is available, it is significantly less accurate than baseline testing.

TheraSport is currently offering individual baseline testing at our Washington Township location on Delsea Drive and group testing through one of our local school’s computer labs.  Location, dates and times to be announced.

Sports Medicine at TheraSport Physical Therapy

Sports Medicine and Sports Physical Therapy go hand in hand. They both consist of specific treatments for sports related injuries and prevention of further injury. Sports Physical Therapy is a specialized therapy program with a focus on prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement to maintain an optimal sports performance.

At TheraSport Physical Therapy we believe there are five main categories in Sports Physical Therapy.

• Evaluation
• Treatment & Rehabilitation
• Prevention
• Performance Enhancement
• Education

Evaluation
Sports rehabilitation consists of evaluating and treating current and chronic injuries by accredited physical therapists. An assessment of surgical and non-surgical neuromusculoskeletal injuries is done to diagnose the proper treatment and therapy regimen. This process includes the functional assessment, of the individual post-injury to assist in a safe return to activity.

Treatment & Rehabilitation
Treatment and rehabilitation of neuromusculoskeletal injuries is our main focus at TheraSport Physical Therapy, we want to get you back to your active lifestyle. In a team approach with your physician, our physical therapists create and implement programs to manage sports related injuries and issues.  Active people of all ages and physical abilities, those with physical disabilities, as well as elite athletes can all benefit from a proper assessment and therapy program.

Prevention
The practice of sports physical therapy to  is to prevent injuries, and if an injury occurs, provides the ability to return to the sport with minimal disruptions. Areas of this practice include pre-screening, specific equipment recommendations, and a cardiovascular fitness program designed to strengthen the athlete and prevent future injuries.

Performance Enhancement
Our therapy team assists athletically active individuals to improve their performance in a variety of ways. A thorough evaluation of the neuromusculoskeletal and the cardiovascular-pulmonary systems is the foundation for performance enhancement evaluations. The results of this evaluation will outline strengths and weaknesses in an individual’s physical overall activity.  Areas of deficiency in flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, and in the aerobic/anaerobic systems can be targeted and applied into a solid training regime. Follow-up evaluations can determine progress towards an individual’s athletic performance.

Education
By educating athletes, parents and coaches about the various preventative and management techniques in sports helps to avoid further injuries.  It is our goal at TheraSport Physical Therapy to not only treat, but also prevent future sports related injuries. Education is based on individual needs of the athlete and what sport they are playing. Our skilled physical therapists will assess and then educate on the importance of preventative therapy.
